“Ambiguity is your friend.” I first heard these words on my first day of MBA school at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Professor Robert Eng, the leader of the week 1 project for first year students, uttered these as a piece of advice for what we were about to experience over the coming week as well as the next 8 months. Amid the late nights, the midnight coffee runs, the despair and the immense level of ambiguity we would feel, Professor Eng urged us to look at it with a positive, entrepreneurial attitude. Find opportunity in the ambiguity. Make sense of the ambiguity. Embrace the ambiguity. After all, that is what the business world, and in fact life, are all about. I’ve repeated these words many times over the past 12 years since my first day at Babson to help clients build confidence as they approached tough problems without any obvious path to a resolution. These words continue to serve as my inspiration… as a change agent, a problem-solver, a coach, a leader… as well as a husband and a father. Thank you Professor Eng… wherever you are.
